An overview of how selling works on Squarespace, including what Commerce plans include, what you can sell, and how orders flow.

squarespacee-commercebeginner

Squarespace Commerce is the built-in selling feature that turns your Squarespace site into an online store. You don't need a separate e-commerce platform — it's all built in.

Quick summary

Squarespace Commerce lets you sell physical products, digital downloads, services, and subscriptions from your Squarespace site. You'll need a Commerce plan (Basic or Advanced). Orders, payments, and inventory are all managed from your dashboard.

What you can sell

Product typeDescription
Physical productsItems you ship to customers (clothing, gifts, art, etc.)
Digital productsDownloadable files (PDFs, music, ebooks, templates)
ServicesBookings, consultations, appointments
SubscriptionsRecurring purchases (available on Commerce Advanced)
Gift cardsDigital gift cards for your store

What plan do you need?

Squarespace Commerce requires a Commerce plan. There are two tiers:

Commerce Basic

  • Unlimited products
  • Inventory management
  • Discount codes
  • Customer accounts
  • Basic analytics
  • 0% transaction fee

Commerce Advanced

Everything in Basic, plus:

  • Abandoned cart recovery
  • Subscriptions
  • Advanced shipping
  • Advanced discounts
  • Commerce APIs

If you're unsure which plan you're on, go to Settings > Billing & Account in your dashboard.

How payments work

Squarespace Commerce processes payments through Stripe (credit and debit cards) and PayPal. You connect your Stripe and/or PayPal accounts in your store settings, and Squarespace handles the checkout experience. Your earnings go directly to your bank account via Stripe's payout schedule.

Squarespace charges 0% transaction fees on Commerce plans (though Stripe and PayPal charge their own small processing fees per transaction).

How orders flow

  1. A customer places an order on your store and pays at checkout.
  2. You receive an email notification with the order details.
  3. The order appears in your Commerce > Orders panel.
  4. You fulfill the order (pack and ship it, or send the digital file).
  5. You mark it as fulfilled in the Orders panel.
  6. The customer receives a confirmation email.

Your store pages

Squarespace automatically creates a set of pages for your store:

  • Store page — your product catalog
  • Cart page — where customers review their selections
  • Checkout page — where customers enter payment and shipping details
  • Order confirmation page — shown after purchase

These pages are managed by Squarespace and have limited customization compared to regular pages.
