Pages & navigation explained
Understand how Squarespace organizes pages, folders, and navigation menus, and how they work together to structure your website.
Your Squarespace website is made up of pages. The Pages section of your dashboard is where you see all of them and control how they're organized. This guide explains how pages and navigation work together.
Quick summary
In Squarespace, pages are organized in a tree structure in the Pages panel. Pages in the "Main Navigation" area appear in your top menu. Pages in "Not Linked" exist but aren't in any menu. You can add, rearrange, and hide pages at any time.
The Pages panel
Open your dashboard and click Pages in the left menu. You'll see a list of all your pages organized into groups:
- Main Navigation — the pages shown in your site's top navigation menu
- Not Linked — pages that exist on your site but aren't linked in any menu (visitors can only find them if you share the direct URL)
- Footer Navigation — pages shown in your site's footer links (not all templates use this)
Types of pages
Squarespace has several types of pages. The ones you'll use most often are:
| Type | What it's for |
|---|---|
| Regular page | Any standard page — About, Services, Contact, etc. |
| Blog page | A blog with multiple posts |
| Store page | A product catalog (Commerce plans only) |
| Portfolio page | A gallery of projects |
| Events page | A calendar of upcoming events |
| Cover page | A single bold page, often used as a "coming soon" |
| Link | An item in the nav that links to an external URL |
| Folder | A group of pages with a dropdown menu |
How page order works
Pages appear in your navigation menu in the order they appear in the Pages panel. To change the order, drag a page up or down in the panel. The change takes effect immediately in your navigation menu.
Dragging pages
When dragging pages in the Pages panel, go slowly. If you accidentally drop a page inside a folder instead of next to it, it will become a sub-page. You can always drag it back out.
Folders and subpages (dropdowns)
If you want a dropdown menu on your navigation, use a Folder. A folder has a title (which appears in the menu) and contains child pages (which appear in the dropdown).
To add a folder:
- Click the + button at the top of the Main Navigation area.
- Choose Folder.
- Name the folder (this becomes the menu label).
- Drag existing pages inside the folder, or add new pages to it.
Hiding a page from navigation
To have a page on your site without showing it in the menu, drag it to the Not Linked section. The page still exists and can be found with its direct URL — it just won't appear in your menus.
Deleting a page
Hover over the page name in the Pages panel.
Click the three-dot menu (or gear icon) that appears.
Choose Delete. Squarespace will ask you to confirm.
Deleting is permanent
Squarespace does not have a trash bin for pages. Once you delete a page, it's gone. If you're not sure, move it to Not Linked instead.
