SEO settings in Squarespace

How to set page titles, meta descriptions, and other SEO options in Squarespace to help your site appear in Google search results.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is about helping Google and other search engines find and understand your site. Squarespace has built-in tools for the key SEO settings. This guide explains what to set and where to find it.

Quick summary

The most important SEO settings are the page title and meta description for each page. Set these in Page Settings > SEO for each page. You can also set site-wide SEO options in Marketing > SEO. Connect Google Search Console for deeper insights.

What "SEO settings" means

When your page appears in Google search results, it shows:

  1. The page title — the clickable headline in blue
  2. The meta description — the brief text below the title

These are set by you in Squarespace — Google doesn't make them up. If you don't set them, Google will use whatever text it finds on your page, which is often not ideal.

Setting SEO for a single page

Go to your dashboard and click Pages.

Hover over the page and click the gear / settings icon.

Click the SEO tab in the page settings.

Fill in the SEO title. This is the title shown in Google. Aim for 50–60 characters. Include your main keyword and your business name if space allows.

Fill in the SEO description. Aim for 140–160 characters. Write a natural sentence that describes what the page is about and encourages clicks.

Click Save.

Don't leave these blank

If you don't set a page title and description, Google uses whatever text it finds on the page. This often looks odd in search results and reduces click-through rates. Fill these in for every important page.

Site-wide SEO settings

Go to Marketing > SEO in your dashboard to access site-wide settings:

  • Site Title — your business name, shown in search results and browser tabs
  • Meta Description — a description of your whole site (used for the homepage if no page-level description is set)
  • Image Alt Text — you can also set alt text on individual images
  • Google Search Console connection — link your site to Google's free tool for search insights

Connecting Google Search Console

Google Search Console is a free tool that shows you which searches are bringing people to your site, whether Google has found any problems, and how to fix them.

Go to Marketing > SEO in your Squarespace dashboard.

Find the Google Search Console section and click Connect.

Follow the prompts to connect your Google account and verify ownership of your site.

Alternatively, Chykalophia can set this up for you as part of your project.

URL structure (page slugs)

The URL of each page matters for SEO. A URL like /services/graphic-design is better than /page-2. You can set the URL slug for each page in Page Settings > General (the first tab).

Keep slugs:

  • Short and descriptive
  • Lowercase with hyphens between words
  • Free of unnecessary words like "the" or "and"

Image alt text

Alt text describes what's in an image. It helps visually impaired users and helps Google understand your images.

For each image on your site, set the alt text in the image settings. See How to edit & replace images for how to do this.
