Step-by-step instructions for opening the Squarespace editor, making changes to a page, and saving or publishing your work.

Editing a page in Squarespace is designed to be visual and straightforward. You open the page, click Edit, and change things right on the page itself. This guide walks you through the whole process.

Quick summary

In the main menu, go to Website, then Pages. Click the page you want, then click Edit in the top-left corner. Click any text, image, or block to change it. Click Save (top left) when you're done, then Exit.

What you'll need

Access to your Squarespace account (see How to log in)
A computer. Some editing features only work on a computer, so it's the easiest way to make most changes.

Opening the editor

Log in at account.squarespace.com and open your website (hover over the site and click Go To Website).

Click Website, then Pages, in the main menu on the left.

Click the page you want to edit in the Pages panel. It opens in the preview.

Click Edit in the top-left corner of the page. Editing controls appear on the page itself.

Editing text

Click into any text block. Highlight some text and a text toolbar appears with formatting options.

Click inside the text to position your cursor where you want to type.

Make your changes — type, delete, or reformat text.

Click outside the text block when you're done editing that block.

Editing images

Click an image to select it, then click the pencil icon in its toolbar. This opens the image block editor, where you can replace or edit the image. The trash can icon in the toolbar deletes the block. See How to edit & replace images for full instructions.

Adding new content

To add a new block (text, image, button, etc.), hover over the section where you want it and click Add Block in the section's top-left corner. Choose a block from the menu, or search for one at the top. In older sections that use Squarespace's classic editor, you'll see + icons on the page instead of an Add Block button.

Saving and discarding changes

Squarespace doesn't save automatically

Squarespace has no auto-save. Most changes don't go live until you click Save (images added to gallery sections, and adding, deleting, or moving pages in your navigation, are the exceptions). If your browser closes, crashes, or loses its connection before you save, those changes are lost and can't be recovered.

When you're done editing, find the Save button in the top-left corner of the editor.

Click Save to keep your changes. They go live, and you can keep editing.

Click Exit, then Save, to close the editor.

To undo a change while you're editing, click the undo arrow in the top-left corner of the editor, or press Cmd+Z (Mac) or Ctrl+Z (Windows). Do it before you click Save: Squarespace's own guides disagree on whether undo still works after saving, and deleted blocks and sections can't be brought back once saved. Once you click Exit, nothing can be undone.

Previewing on different devices

While you're editing, click the Mobile View icon in the top-right corner to see how the page looks on a phone. In Fluid Engine sections (the default kind of block section on version 7.1), you can also arrange the mobile layout separately from the desktop one.

Common questions

I edited a page but the changes aren't showing on my live site. What happened?

Check that you clicked Save. Then do a hard refresh to load a fresh copy of the page: press Ctrl+F5 on Windows, or Cmd+Shift+R on a Mac (in Chrome or Firefox). If the changes still don't appear, see Troubleshooting Squarespace problems.

I accidentally deleted something. Can I undo it?

If you haven't saved yet, click the undo arrow in the top-left corner, or press Ctrl+Z (Windows) or Cmd+Z (Mac). A deleted block or section can't be brought back once you've saved, and nothing can be undone after you click Exit. Squarespace doesn't keep a page history, so you'd need to rebuild the content by hand. A whole page you deleted can be restored within 30 days. See Undoing changes and recovering deleted pages.

The Edit button isn't appearing. What's wrong?

First, make sure you've clicked the page in the Pages panel. The Edit button sits in the top-left corner of the page, not in the list. If it still isn't there, your contributor role may not allow page editing. Billing and Viewer roles, for example, can't edit page content. Ask whoever manages your Squarespace account to check your role. See Contributors & permissions.

Can I edit on my phone?

Partly. You can log in from your phone's browser (Safari on iPhone, Chrome on Android) or use the Squarespace app, but some editing needs a computer. For example, the app can edit existing blocks but can't add or rearrange them. For major edits, use a laptop or desktop.
