Writing & publishing a blog post
Step-by-step instructions for creating, writing, formatting, and publishing a blog post in Squarespace.
Publishing a blog post on Squarespace is a straightforward process. This guide walks you through every step, from opening a new post to hitting publish.
Quick summary
Open your blog page, click the + button to create a new post, write your content, add a featured image and categories, set the SEO details, and then click Publish (or Save as Draft if you're not ready yet).
What you'll need
Beginner 15–30 minutes- Access to your Squarespace account
- Your written content ready (writing directly in Squarespace is fine)
- A featured image for the post (optional but recommended)
Creating a new post
Go to your blog page in the Pages panel. (See Using the Squarespace blog if you need help finding it.)
Click the + button to create a new post. A new blank post opens.
Add a post title at the top of the editor.
Writing your content
The blog post editor looks similar to a page editor, but it's focused on text-first content.
- Body text — click in the main area and start typing.
- Headings — use the text style dropdown to add H2 and H3 headings to break up your content.
- Images — click the + icon between paragraphs to add an image block.
- Quotes — use the Quote style for highlighted quotes or testimonials.
- Lists — use the bullet or numbered list buttons in the toolbar.
Keep paragraphs short — two to four sentences is ideal for web reading.
Adding a featured image
The featured image is the thumbnail shown in your blog post list and on social media when the post is shared.
Look for the post settings panel — usually on the right side or accessible via a settings icon.
Find the Thumbnail or Featured Image section.
Click to add an image — upload from your computer or select from Squarespace's image library.
Setting the post details
In the post settings panel (accessible via the gear or settings icon), fill in:
- Post URL (slug) — the web address for this post. Keep it short and descriptive (for example:
/blog/5-tips-for-new-clients). Avoid spaces and capital letters. - Categories — choose the categories this post belongs to.
- Tags — add relevant keywords.
- Author — choose the author if your blog has multiple contributors.
- Excerpt — a short description of the post shown in the blog list and in search results.
Filling in SEO details
Still in the post settings, find the SEO tab:
- SEO title — the title shown in Google search results. Often the same as your post title, but can be adjusted.
- SEO description — a 150–160 character summary of the post. This is what appears below your link in Google.
See SEO settings in Squarespace for more on this.
Publishing or saving as a draft
When you're ready to publish, look for the Publish button in the post editor.
Click Publish to make the post live immediately.
If you want to save the post and come back to it:
- Click Save to save as a draft. The post won't be visible to visitors yet.
- To schedule publication, look for the scheduling option and set the date and time. The post will go live automatically.
Your post is live!
After publishing, visit your blog page to confirm the post appears. Share the link on your social media or in your email newsletter.
