How to add, remove, rename, and reorder items in your Squarespace navigation menus, including creating dropdown menus.

Your navigation menu is how visitors find their way around your site. Keeping it clear and up to date is one of the most important things you can do as a site owner. This guide shows you exactly how to manage it.

Quick summary

In Squarespace, navigation menus are controlled through the Pages panel. Drag pages up or down to reorder them. Add a Dropdown to create a dropdown menu. Move pages to "Not linked" to hide them from menus. Adding, deleting, and moving pages goes live as soon as a visitor refreshes the page. Renaming a page needs a Save.

Squarespace automatically builds your navigation from the pages you have in the Main Navigation section of the Pages panel. Whatever order the pages are in — that's the order they appear in your menu.

On version 7.1, there's no separate footer navigation section in the Pages panel. Your footer (the area at the bottom of every page) is edited on the page itself: click Edit, hover over the footer, and click Edit footer. Some older version 7.0 templates also have a Footer Navigation section in the Pages panel.

If a page already exists and you want it to appear in the menu:

In the main menu, click Website, then Pages.

Find the page you want to add to the menu. It might be in the "Not linked" section.

Click and drag the page into the Main Navigation section.

Drop it at the position you want. The menu on your live site updates straight away (refresh your browser if you don't see it).

To add a brand new page to the navigation, click the + button next to Main Navigation, then click + Add Blank or choose one of the ready-made layouts.

Go to Pages.

Drag the page from the Main Navigation section down into the Not linked section.

The page remains live on your site but is no longer in the menu. Visitors can still reach it via a direct link, and search engines can still list it.

Hover over the page name in the Pages panel.

Click the gear icon next to the page.

In the General tab, find the Navigation Title field. This controls what text appears in the menu (independent of the page title).

Edit the navigation title and click Save.

You can give a page a short navigation label (like "About") and a longer, more descriptive page title (like "About Our Studio"). The navigation title is what shows in the menu, and it's also the page's name in your Pages panel.

Go to Pages.

Click and hold the page you want to move.

Drag the page up or down to the desired position.

Release. The menu updates straight away. If the change doesn't show, refresh your browser.

Squarespace now calls these dropdowns. They used to be called folders.

Click the + button next to Main Navigation.

Choose Dropdown.

Name the dropdown. This is the label that appears in the menu (e.g., "Services").

Drag existing pages into the space below the dropdown, or add new pages to it by clicking Add Page under the dropdown.

The dropdown menu appears in your navigation when visitors hover over its name. On phones, it opens when tapped.

Deleting a dropdown deletes its pages

If you delete a dropdown, every page inside it is deleted too (you can restore them from Deleted Pages within 30 days). Drag the pages out first if you want to keep them.

Click the + button next to Main Navigation.

Choose Link.

Enter a label under Link Title (the text shown in the menu) and the full URL under Link (e.g., https://instagram.com/yourbusiness), then click Save.

Drag it to the desired position.

Common questions

Check that the page is enabled: open its settings (gear icon) and make sure the Enable Page toggle is on. Disabled pages stay in your Pages panel but don't appear in your site's navigation. Also check whether the header has been turned off for the page you're looking at (the Navigation tab in that page's settings), since the menu sits in the header. If the issue persists, contact Chykalophia.

A navigation menu with more than 6–7 items can feel overwhelming for visitors. Consider using dropdowns to group related pages, or moving some pages to Not linked and linking to them from within the content instead.
