Editing your navigation menu

How to add, remove, rename, and reorder items in your Squarespace navigation menus, including creating dropdown folders.

Your navigation menu is how visitors find their way around your site. Keeping it clear and up to date is one of the most important things you can do as a site owner. This guide shows you exactly how to manage it.

Quick summary

In Squarespace, navigation menus are controlled through the Pages panel. Drag pages up or down to reorder them. Add a Folder to create a dropdown. Move pages to "Not Linked" to hide them from menus. Changes save automatically.

Where navigation menus come from

Squarespace automatically builds your navigation from the pages you have in the Main Navigation section of the Pages panel. Whatever order the pages are in — that's the order they appear in your menu.

Most sites also have a Footer Navigation — links displayed in the footer area at the bottom of every page.

Adding a page to the navigation

If a page already exists and you want it to appear in the menu:

Go to your dashboard and click Pages.

Find the page you want to add to the menu. It might be in the "Not Linked" section.

Click and drag the page into the Main Navigation section.

Drop it at the position you want. The menu updates instantly.

To add a brand new page to the navigation, click the + button at the top of the Main Navigation section and choose the page type.

Removing a page from the navigation (without deleting it)

Go to Pages.

Drag the page from the Main Navigation section down into the Not Linked section.

The page remains live on your site but is no longer in the menu. Visitors can still reach it via a direct link.

Renaming a navigation item

Hover over the page name in the Pages panel.

Click the gear or settings icon next to the page.

In the Page Settings, find the Navigation Title field. This controls what text appears in the menu (independent of the page title).

Edit the navigation title and click Save.

Navigation title vs page title

You can give a page a short navigation label (like "About") and a longer, more descriptive page title (like "About Our Studio"). The navigation title is just for the menu.

Reordering navigation items

Go to Pages.

Click and hold the drag handle to the left of a page name.

Drag the page up or down to the desired position.

Release. The menu updates immediately.

Creating a dropdown menu (Folder)

Click the + button in the Main Navigation section.

Choose Folder.

Name the folder — this is the label that appears in the menu (e.g., "Services").

Drag existing pages inside the folder, or add new pages to it using the + button inside the folder.

The dropdown menu will appear automatically in your navigation when visitors hover over the folder name.

Click the + button in the Main Navigation section.

Choose Link.

Enter a label (the text shown in the menu) and the full URL (e.g., https://instagram.com/yourbusiness).

Drag it to the desired position.
