Page history & duplicating
How to view previous versions of a Squarespace page, restore changes, and duplicate pages to create new ones from an existing layout.
Everyone makes accidental changes. Squarespace has some tools to help you recover earlier versions of your content and create new pages based on existing ones. This guide explains what's available.
Quick summary
Squarespace does not have a traditional full-site backup system for clients to manage. However, it does store page revision history so you can roll back changes. You can also duplicate pages to reuse an existing layout. For full backups, rely on Squarespace's automatic backups — or ask Chykalophia.
Understanding Squarespace backups
Squarespace automatically backs up your site on their servers. This is a platform-level backup managed entirely by Squarespace — you don't control it yourself. If there's a major platform issue, Squarespace can restore from these backups.
However, these platform backups are not accessible to you as a client for self-service restoration. For content-level changes, Squarespace provides Page History and the Version History feature.
Using page history to undo changes
Squarespace saves a history of edits to each page. If you've made a mistake and want to go back to an earlier version:
Open the page editor for the page you want to restore.
Look for a History or Version History option. This is sometimes accessible via a clock icon or a menu in the editor toolbar.
Browse the list of saved versions — each shows a timestamp.
Click on an older version to preview it.
Click Restore if the version looks correct.
Version history availability
Version history features may vary depending on your Squarespace plan and the version of your template. If you can't find a history option, try using Ctrl+Z (Windows) or Cmd+Z (Mac) while in the editor to undo recent changes within the current session.
Duplicating a page
Duplicating is useful when you want to create a new page with the same structure as an existing one — for example, adding a new service page with the same layout as your existing ones.
Go to your dashboard and click Pages.
Hover over the page you want to duplicate.
Click the three-dot menu (or gear icon) next to the page name.
Choose Duplicate. A copy of the page is created, usually named "Copy of [Page Name]."
Click on the new page to rename it and edit its content.
Update the URL slug in Page Settings to match the new content.
Exporting content for your own records
Squarespace allows you to export some content:
- Blog posts can be exported as an XML file
- Products can be exported as a CSV
To export: go to Settings > Advanced > Import/Export. This is useful if you ever need to move your content to another platform or want a personal backup of your written content.
Export limitations
Squarespace's export feature doesn't capture your full site design, page layouts, or images. It's primarily useful for content (text posts and products). Design and layout would need to be rebuilt on any new platform.
