Links and buttons guide your visitors to take action. This guide shows you how to update where they go, and how to change their text.

Quick summary

Open your site in Webflow and click a link or button to select it. Click the Link icon that appears above it to change where it points, or the pencil icon to change a button's words. Publish when you're done.

What you'll need

Your site open in Webflow
The URL you want the link or button to point to (or the name of the page on your site)

Editing a link's destination

Open your site in Webflow and go to the page with the link. From the Webflow Dashboard, hover over your site and click Open in Webflow, then choose the page in the Pages panel. Or open the page on your live site and add ?update to the end of its address.

Click on the link or button. A blue outline shows it can be edited. Click it, then click the Link icon that appears above it.

Check the current destination. The link settings open and show where the link points now.

Update the URL or choose a page. For another website, choose the URL link type and paste the full web address (like https://example.com). For a page on your own site, choose the Page link type and pick the page from the Page dropdown.

Set whether it opens in the same tab or a new tab. Tick Open in a new tab if you want the link to open in a new tab. For links to external sites, it's usually better to open in a new tab. For links to pages on your own site, same tab is standard.

Click elsewhere to finish. Webflow saves your changes automatically. Then Publish when you're ready.

Editing a button's text

Click on the button. Icons appear above it once it's selected.

Edit the text. Click the pencil icon, then type your new label.

Click elsewhere and then Publish.

Types of links in Webflow

Webflow supports several link types. You'll see these as options in the link settings (links inside long-form "rich text" areas offer fewer of them):

Link type	When to use
URL	Any web address, including another website
Collection page	The page for a CMS item, such as a blog post (used in CMS lists and CMS pages)
Page	A page within your Webflow site
Page section	An anchor link to a specific section on the current page
Email	Lets visitors email the address you enter with a click or tap
Phone	Lets visitors call the number you enter with a click or tap
File	Links directly to a file you upload, such as a PDF (paid plans only)

Email and phone links

If you want a button that lets visitors email you or call you:

Email link: select Email as the link type and type your address (for example, hello@yourbusiness.com).
Phone link: select Phone as the link type and type your number, including the country code (for example, +15551234567).

These links open the visitor's email app or start a phone call when clicked or tapped.

When you can't edit a link

Some links can't be changed with the content editor role. Your designer may have locked that element. Or the link may sit inside a menu, slider or tab that's part of a shared component (navigation bars and footers often are), where some content can't be edited at all. If clicking on a link shows no blue outline or Link icon, it's probably one of these.

Check links after updating

After updating a link, always click through it yourself (in a new tab) to confirm it goes to the right place before publishing.

Common questions

I updated a link but it still goes to the old page.

Check that you clicked Publish after making the change. Changes you make in Webflow don't go live until you publish. Also clear your browser cache if you're still seeing the old destination.

I can't see any settings when I click the button.

The button may not be editable with your role. This can happen when your designer has locked it, or when it sits inside a navigation bar, slider or tab that's part of a shared component. Contact Chykalophia for those changes.

Should links open in a new tab or the same tab?

Links to pages on your own site: same tab. Links to external sites: new tab (so the visitor doesn't lose your site). File links: images and documents (like PDFs) open in the same tab unless you tick Open in a new tab, and other file types download to the visitor's device.

How do I link to a specific section on a page?

Anchor links (links to a section within a page) require the section to have an ID set in the Designer. If you need to add or change an anchor link, ask Chykalophia.
