How to edit CMS items (blog posts, etc.)

Step-by-step instructions for editing existing CMS items in Webflow — such as blog posts, team members, or case studies.

Whether you need to fix a typo in a blog post, update a team member's title, or change a case study description — this guide walks you through editing existing CMS items in Webflow.

Quick summary

Open the Editor, click the CMS icon in the toolbar, find the Collection you need, click the item you want to edit, make your changes in the editing panel, and then publish. Draft items won't appear on the live site until they're published.

What you'll need

Beginner 5 minutes
  • The Webflow Editor open on your site
  • The name of the item you want to edit (e.g., the blog post title)

How to edit a CMS item

Open the Editor. Log in to webflow.com, find your project, and open the Editor.

Find the CMS panel. Look for the CMS icon in the Editor toolbar — it often looks like a stack of layers. Click it to open the CMS panel.

Select the Collection. Click the Collection that contains the item you want to edit (e.g., "Blog Posts," "Team Members").

Find and click the item. Scroll through the list to find your item. You can usually search or sort to find it faster.

Edit the fields in the panel. The editing panel shows all the fields for that item. Click into any field to edit it. This might include Title, Body, Featured Image, Published Date, etc.

Save the item. Click the Save button (or equivalent) within the item panel. This saves the item without publishing it live.

Publish your changes. Click the Publish button in the main Editor toolbar to make the changes visible on your live site.

Save vs Publish

Saving a CMS item stores your changes in the CMS but doesn't make them live. Pressing Publish pushes all saved changes live. This lets you edit multiple items before updating the live site in one go.

Editing the body text of a blog post

If your blog post has a rich text body field, editing it works like editing any rich text area:

  • Click into the body field
  • Edit text directly, or use the formatting toolbar
  • Add new paragraphs by pressing Enter
  • Always paste text using Ctrl+Shift+V / Cmd+Shift+V to strip external formatting

See How to edit text for more on formatting best practices.

Editing on the live page vs in the CMS panel

Some CMS content can be edited directly on the page (by clicking on it in the Editor) as well as through the CMS panel. Both methods edit the same underlying data.

Editing through the CMS panel is often easier for long-form content like blog posts, because you have more space to work with.

Changing a CMS item's status (Draft / Published)

Inside each item's editing panel, you'll find a status toggle:

  • Draft — the item is saved but not visible on the live site
  • Published — the item is live (after you click the main Publish button)

Use Draft status while you're working on an item that isn't ready yet. Switch it to Published when you want it to go live.

Published date vs live status

Some CMS items have a "Published Date" field (often used for blog posts to show the article date). This is separate from whether the item is in "Draft" or "Published" state. You can set a past date on a published item or a future date — neither automatically controls when the item goes live. You control live status with the Draft/Published toggle.
