CMS collections explained
What Webflow CMS Collections are, how they work, and why your dynamic content — blog posts, team pages, and more — is powered by them.
Collections are the backbone of your Webflow CMS. Understanding them helps you manage your content confidently and know when to ask for help from Chykalophia.
Quick summary
A Collection is a structured content type — like "Blog Posts" or "Team Members." Each Collection has a set of fields (e.g., title, image, bio). Each individual post or team member is a "CMS item" in that Collection. You manage items; Chykalophia manages the Collection structure.
What is a Collection?
A Collection is a content type with a defined set of fields. Think of it like a spreadsheet where:
- The spreadsheet name is the Collection name (e.g., "Blog Posts")
- Each column header is a field (e.g., Title, Published Date, Featured Image, Body)
- Each row is a CMS item (e.g., one blog post)
The power of Collections is that the design is applied automatically. Chykalophia creates a page template once, and every item in the Collection looks great without any extra design work from you.
Common Collections on Chykalophia sites
| Collection name | What it powers |
|---|---|
| Blog Posts | Your blog or news section |
| Team Members | Your team or staff page |
| Case Studies / Portfolio | Project showcases |
| Services | Your service listings |
| FAQs | Question-and-answer sections |
| Testimonials | Client quotes |
| Locations | Offices or service areas |
Your specific site may use different Collection names — they're customized for your project.
Fields: the building blocks of a Collection
Every Collection is made up of fields. Common field types include:
| Field type | What it stores |
|---|---|
| Plain text | Short text — titles, names, taglines |
| Rich text | Formatted content — blog body, descriptions |
| Image | A photo or graphic |
| Link | A URL |
| Date/Time | Dates for publishing, events |
| Switch (on/off) | Toggle for things like "Featured" or "Active" |
| Reference | Links to another Collection item |
| Multi-reference | Links to multiple items in another Collection |
| Option | A dropdown with preset choices |
| Color | A hex color value |
| Number | A numeric value |
Fields are configured by Chykalophia. You fill them in when creating or editing items.
How Collections connect to pages
Every Collection can have a Collection page — a designed template that shows the details of one item at a time. When a visitor clicks on a blog post link, they land on the Collection page for that item.
Collections can also power Collection lists — lists of items on any page (like a blog archive or a team grid).
Both the Collection page and Collection lists are designed by Chykalophia. You control what content is in each item.
Collection limits
Webflow plans set a maximum number of CMS items across all Collections. If you're approaching your plan's limit, you'll see a warning. Contact Chykalophia if this happens — we can advise on whether to upgrade your plan or archive old items.
