How to add a new section in Elementor

Learn how to add a new content section (or container) to any page in Elementor, choose a column layout, and fill it with widgets.

elementorwordpressbeginnerediting

Adding a new section lets you insert a new content area anywhere on your page. This is how you add a new row — whether for a new service, a testimonial block, or a call-to-action banner.

Quick summary

Hover between two existing sections on the canvas and click the blue + button that appears. Choose your column layout, then drag widgets from the left panel into your new section. Publish when done.

What you'll need

Beginner 5 minutes
  • The Elementor editor open

How to add a new section (legacy structure)

Hover between two existing sections on the canvas. A thin blue line appears between them with a + icon.

Click the + icon. A small overlay appears asking you to choose a column structure (1 column, 2 columns, 3 columns, etc.).

Click the layout you want. For example, click the 2-column icon if you want text on the left and an image on the right.

The new section is added to the page with empty columns. You will see grey placeholder boxes.

Drag widgets from the left panel into the empty columns to fill the section with content.

Style and configure the section as needed, then click Update or Publish.

How to add a new container (modern structure)

If your site uses Containers rather than Sections, the process is slightly different.

Hover between two existing containers on the canvas. A blue + button appears.

Click the + button. Choose a layout direction (horizontal row or vertical column).

The new container is added. Drag widgets directly into it from the left panel.

To add inner containers (for side-by-side columns), drag a Container widget from the left panel into your new container.

Adding a section at the top or bottom of the page

You can also add sections at the very top or bottom of the page:

  • At the bottom: Scroll to the bottom of the canvas and click the large + button labeled "Add New Section" or "Add New Container."
  • At the top: Hover above the first section and click the + that appears.

Moving a section

To move a new section (or any existing section) to a different position:

Hover over the section you want to move until the grey handle appears at the top.

Click and hold the drag icon (six dots arranged in a grid) on the handle.

Drag the section up or down to its new position. Release when the blue line shows where it will land.

Moving sections with lots of content

Dragging a complex section with many elements can occasionally cause display glitches in the editor. If something looks wrong after moving, undo (Ctrl+Z / Cmd+Z) and try again, or use the revision history to revert.

Filling a section with content

After adding a new section, add widgets by:

  1. Making sure the section (and a column inside it) is visible and empty
  2. Browsing the widget library in the left panel
  3. Dragging the widget onto the canvas into the empty column area

See The most useful Elementor widgets for guidance on which widget to use.
