How to attach files & screenshots
How to attach images, screenshots, documents, and other files to a ClickUp task or comment so the team has everything they need.
Attaching files to a ClickUp task keeps everything in one place. Instead of emailing a screenshot or a document separately, you can attach it directly to the task it relates to. This guide shows you how, on desktop and mobile.
Quick summary
Open the task, find the attachment area (or comment box), and either drag your file in or click to browse for it. Attachments are visible to everyone with access to the task. Supported formats include images, PDFs, Word documents, spreadsheets, and most common file types.
What you'll need
Beginner Under 2 minutes- A ClickUp account (see Getting your ClickUp invite)
- The file you want to attach, saved on your device
Where attachments live on a task
When you open a task, you'll see an Attachments section. It's usually found:
- In the task detail panel, in a collapsible section on the right side or near the bottom
- As a small paperclip icon in the toolbar area
Files attached here are associated with the whole task. You can also attach a file directly to an individual comment — useful when your file relates to a specific point in the conversation.
How to attach a file
Drag and drop is the fastest method on a desktop computer.
Open the task you want to add a file to.
Find your file in a Finder window (Mac) or File Explorer window (Windows). Resize the windows so you can see both ClickUp and your file at the same time.
Click and hold your file, then drag it into the ClickUp task window. Drop it anywhere in the task body or directly onto the Attachments area.
Wait for the upload to finish. A progress bar or spinner will appear. Once it disappears, your file is attached.
You can also drag a file directly into the comment box to attach it to a specific comment.
Use this method if drag and drop isn't working, or if you prefer to browse.
Open the task you want to add a file to.
Find the attachment button. Look for a paperclip icon in the task toolbar, or a button that says Attach or Add attachment in the Attachments section.
Click the attachment button. A file picker dialog will open.
Navigate to your file and select it. Click Open or Choose.
Wait for the upload to finish. Your file will appear in the Attachments section once it's done.
To attach a file to a comment, click the paperclip icon inside the comment editor instead.
You can attach files from the ClickUp mobile app on iOS or Android.
Open the ClickUp app and navigate to your project. See Using ClickUp on your phone if you need help setting it up.
Tap the task you want to attach a file to.
Scroll down to the Attachments section or tap the comment box.
Tap the paperclip or attachment icon. You'll be prompted to choose where your file comes from — your photo library, a file app, or your camera (to take a photo right now).
Select your file or photo. It will upload automatically.
Taking a photo with your camera is a great way to share a quick screenshot of a physical document or an issue you're seeing on a printed proof.
Tips for great attachments
Do this
- Name your files clearly before attaching:
homepage-hero-v2.jpgis much more helpful thanimage001.jpg - Include a comment explaining what the file shows, especially for screenshots
- Attach screenshots at full resolution — don't resize them before sending
Avoid this
- Attaching files to the wrong task — double-check the task title before you upload
- Sending the same file over email AND attaching it to the task — pick one place
- Attaching very large videos — share those via a Google Drive link in a comment instead
How to take a screenshot
If you want to share something you're seeing on your screen, a screenshot is the fastest way.
- Shift + Cmd + 4 — click and drag to capture a selected area. The screenshot saves to your desktop.
- Shift + Cmd + 3 — capture the whole screen.
- Shift + Cmd + 5 — open the screenshot toolbar for more options.
- Windows key + Shift + S — opens the Snipping Tool so you can select an area. The screenshot is copied to your clipboard and you can paste it into ClickUp.
- Print Screen (PrtSc) — captures the whole screen to your clipboard.
Once you have your screenshot, attach it to the relevant task as described above.
