Signs your website is costing you leads
The common, fixable reasons a business website loses enquiries, how to check for each one yourself, and when the problem isn't the website at all.
Most websites don't fail loudly. They just quietly let people leave who would have called you. The good news is that the causes are usually ordinary and checkable. This guide walks through the signs, how to test for each, and what to do about it.
Troubleshooter
Where is your site leaking?
Check the plumbing first
These are the cheapest problems to fix and the most expensive to ignore.
Forms that don't arrive
A contact form can look fine and still fail silently, because an email setting changed, a plugin updated or messages are landing in spam. Send yourself a test enquiry from every form on the site, on a phone and a computer. See My forms aren't working and I'm not getting form emails.
Phone numbers you can't tap
On a phone, your number should be a tappable link. Check the header, footer and contact page.
Enquiries nobody answers quickly
Look at your inbox. How long does a new enquiry wait for a reply? If leads sit for days, the website is doing its job and the follow-up isn't.
No tracking
If you can't say how many enquiries the site produced last month, you can't tell whether it's leaking. Set up conversion tracking first. See Conversions and goals explained.
Signs in the message
Visitors can't tell what you do
Open your homepage and look for three seconds. Does the main heading say what you do and who it's for? "Solutions for tomorrow" doesn't. "Commercial roofing repairs across Ohio" does. See Writing hero copy.
It talks about you, not the customer
Count how often the homepage says "we" versus "you". Customers want to know whether you can solve their problem, not your company history.
There's no proof
Reviews, client logos, case studies, certifications, real photos of your team and work. Without them, visitors have only your word. Only use genuine testimonials, with permission.
No clear next step
Every important page should end with one obvious action: book a call, request a quote, buy. Several competing buttons, or none, cost enquiries. See Calls to action.
Prices are a mystery
You don't have to publish prices, but give people something: a starting point, what affects the price or how quoting works. Visitors who can't tell whether you're in their range often leave. See Writing pricing pages.
Signs in the experience
It's hard to use on a phone
Many visitors will see your site on a phone first. Try finding a service and contacting you, one-handed. Tiny text, menus that cover the page and forms with too many fields are common problems. See Mobile and SEO.
It's slow
Slow pages lose people before they've read a word. Test your key pages in Google's PageSpeed Insights. See Why speed matters.
Forms ask too much
Every extra required field gives someone a reason to stop. Ask only what you need for the first conversation.
Pop-ups and chat widgets fight for attention
One well-timed prompt can help. Three overlapping ones on a phone screen make people leave.
It looks out of date
Visitors use appearance as a shortcut for credibility. Old copyright dates, stale news and expired offers suggest nobody's home.
Signs in your numbers
If you have Google Analytics and Search Console set up, look for:
- Traffic is steady but enquiries are falling. The site, the offer or the form is the problem, not visibility.
- Your key service pages get visits but almost no enquiries. Those pages need better content and a clearer next step.
- Most visitors arrive on a page that isn't your homepage. That page is your real front door. Make sure it does the job.
- Mobile converts far worse than desktop. Usually a mobile experience issue.
Understanding your monthly report explains where to find these numbers.
When it isn't the website
Be honest with yourself. A website can't fix:
- Too little traffic. If very few of the right people visit, no design change will produce many leads. That's a visibility problem: SEO, ads, referrals, partnerships.
- The wrong traffic. If you rank for the wrong searches, you'll get visits that never convert.
- An offer people don't want at that price.
- Slow or patchy follow-up once an enquiry arrives.
What to do next
Test every form and phone link today. It takes ten minutes.
Set up conversion tracking if you don't have it, so you have a baseline.
Rewrite your homepage hero and your top service page with a clear promise, proof and one next step.
Watch the numbers for a few weeks and compare.
