Understanding your monthly report

Every month, Chykalophia sends you an analytics report covering your website's performance. This guide explains what each part of that report means and how to use the information to make smart decisions about your business.

Quick summary

Your monthly report covers traffic (how many people visited), channels (where they came from), top pages (what they read), engagement (how long they stayed), and conversions (actions taken). The most important thing is not individual numbers but trends over time — are things moving in the right direction?

How to read your report

When you receive your monthly report, resist the urge to fixate on individual numbers. Instead, ask these questions:

  1. Are the key numbers higher or lower than last month?
  2. Are they higher or lower than the same month last year?
  3. Are there any unusual spikes or drops that need explaining?
  4. Is the trend over the last 3–6 months positive, flat, or declining?

Year-over-year comparison is especially important for seasonal businesses. A retail website will naturally have lower traffic in January than December — comparing month-by-month without context can be misleading.

Key sections you will see

Traffic overview

This shows total users, sessions, and pageviews for the month. You will typically see a comparison to the previous month or the same month last year.

What to look for: Are visitors increasing? Is the growth consistent, or are there unusual spikes (which may indicate a viral post or a news mention)?

Traffic sources (channels)

This breaks down where your visitors came from — organic search, direct, social, email, referral, paid.

What to look for: Which channels are growing? Are you too dependent on one source? If one channel drops significantly, it warrants investigation.

Top pages

A list of the pages that received the most visits that month.

What to look for: Are the right pages getting traffic? If your services page is outside the top 10, that is worth noting. If a blog post is suddenly getting a lot of traffic, that content may be resonating.

Engagement metrics

Engagement rate and average engagement time for the site overall.

What to look for: Are visitors engaging with your content? A drop in engagement rate over several months may suggest content is becoming stale or that new traffic is poorly matched to your offering.

Conversions

The number of key actions completed — form submissions, purchases, phone clicks, etc.

What to look for: This is the most business-relevant number. Is the conversion rate holding steady? If traffic is up but conversions are flat, something may be blocking people from taking action.

The one number that matters most

Conversion rate (conversions ÷ sessions) is the single most important metric for most business websites. A rising conversion rate means your website is becoming more effective, regardless of traffic levels.

What to do after reading your report

If the report raises questions, here is how to respond:

  • Traffic dropped unexpectedly: Check if there was a Google algorithm update that month, or a technical issue on your site.
  • Conversions dropped: Check that your forms and purchase flows are still working correctly.
  • A page is getting unexpected traffic: Investigate why — it may be an SEO opportunity worth building on.
  • One channel suddenly grew: Find out why so you can repeat it.
