SEO basics for business owners
Plain-English guides to search engine optimization — from how Google works to keywords, local SEO, and measuring your results.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the work of helping the right people find your business when they search. These guides explain what SEO actually is, what it takes, and how to make smart decisions about it — no technical background needed.
This section is written for business owners, not marketers. You do not need to do any of this work yourself to benefit from reading it. Knowing the basics is mostly about being able to tell good advice from bad.
Quick summary
SEO has four moving parts: the words people search for, the pages on your site, the technical setup underneath, and the results you measure. This section covers all four. Be realistic about time: Google's own answer is that "some changes might take effect in a few hours, others could take several months," so plan in months, not weeks — longer again in competitive markets. Anyone promising page-one rankings in weeks is selling you something.
If you only read three things
- What is SEO? — the foundation.
- SEO: setting realistic expectations — read this before you buy any SEO service, not after.
- Common SEO myths debunked — what you don't need to spend time or money on.
The path through this section
Understand the game. What is SEO? and How search engines work explain what Google is actually doing when it decides who ranks. Pair them with SEO: setting realistic expectations so you know what timeline you are signing up for.
Pick what you want to be found for. Keyword research basics shows you how to find the phrases your customers actually type, rather than the ones you assume they use.
Improve the pages you already have. On-page SEO explained is the practical checklist: titles, headings, links, images, and URLs.
Set up the tool that makes it manageable. SEO plugins explained covers what a plugin like Yoast or Rank Math does for you — and, just as importantly, what it cannot do.
Measure whether it worked. How to measure SEO results tells you which numbers matter and where to find them.
Keep your expectations straight. Come back to Common SEO myths debunked and SEO: setting realistic expectations whenever someone emails you a scary-sounding "SEO audit".
