Step-by-step instructions for taking a screenshot on Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android to share with our support team.

A screenshot is a photo of what's on your screen. It's the fastest way to show us exactly what you're seeing — far clearer than trying to describe it in words. This guide shows you how to take one on any device.

Quick summary

On a Mac, press Cmd+Shift+4 to select an area and save a screenshot to your desktop. On Windows, press Windows+Shift+S. On most iPhones, press the side button and volume up at the same time. On Android, press the power and volume-down buttons together.

Option 1 — Capture a selected area (recommended)

Press Cmd + Shift + 4. Your cursor changes to a crosshair.

Click and drag over the area of the screen you want to capture. Release the mouse button.

The screenshot saves to your Desktop, with the date and time in the file name. If a thumbnail appears in the corner of your screen first, you can click it to edit the screenshot, or just wait for it to save.

Option 2 — Capture the whole screen

Press Cmd + Shift + 3. The entire screen is captured immediately.

The file saves to your Desktop.

Option 3 — Capture a single window

Press Cmd + Shift + 4, then press and release Space. The pointer becomes a camera icon.

Click the window you want to capture. The window is saved as its own screenshot.

Find the file on your Desktop.

Attach it to an email by dragging it into the compose window, or by clicking the paperclip icon in your email app.

Or drag it directly into a ClickUp comment when replying to a task.

Screenshot saved to your clipboard?

If you add Ctrl to the shortcut (e.g., Cmd+Ctrl+Shift+4), the screenshot copies to your clipboard instead of saving to the Desktop. You can then paste it directly with Cmd+V.

Common questions

I took a screenshot but can't find the file.

On Mac, check your Desktop — that's the default. If someone has changed it, the Screenshot app (Cmd+Shift+5) has an Options menu that sets where screenshots are saved. On Windows, screenshots taken with Windows+Shift+S or the PrtScn key go to the clipboard, so you have to save them yourself; Windows+PrtScn saves straight to the Screenshots subfolder of your Pictures folder.

Can I annotate or highlight part of the screenshot?

Yes. On Mac, click the thumbnail that appears right after you take the screenshot, or open the file in Preview and use its Markup toolbar. On Windows, a snip opens in the Snipping Tool window, which has pen and highlighter tools. On iPhone running iOS 26, the screenshot opens with Markup ready to use; on iOS 18 and earlier, tap the thumbnail in the corner first.

The screenshot is too large to attach to an email.

Screenshots are usually small enough to email, but a very large display at full resolution can produce a big file. On Mac, open it in Preview and choose Tools → Adjust Size. On Windows, open it in Paint and resize it there. Alternatively, upload it to Google Drive or Dropbox and send us the link.
