The Microsoft 365 admin center, explained

A tour of the Microsoft 365 admin center — what it is, how to navigate it, and the key tasks you can do there as a business owner or admin.

The Microsoft 365 admin center is the control panel for your whole account. As an admin, this is where you add team members, reset passwords, manage subscriptions, and configure security. You don't need to use it every day, but it's important to know where it is.

Quick summary

The admin center lives at admin.microsoft.com. Sign in with your admin account. From there you can manage users, licenses, billing, security, and settings for everyone in your organization. Only people with the admin role can access it.

What you'll need

5 minutes to explore Admin access required

You need to be an admin in your Microsoft 365 organization. If you are not sure whether you have admin access, try signing in at admin.microsoft.com. If you see the admin dashboard, you have access. If you are redirected to the regular Microsoft 365 home page, you don't have the admin role.

Getting to the admin center

Go to admin.microsoft.com in your browser.

Sign in with your work email address and password. If you use multi-factor authentication, approve the prompt on your phone.

You're in the admin center. You will see a dashboard with shortcuts to the most common tasks.

You can also reach the admin center from the Microsoft 365 home page: click the app launcher (the grid of dots in the top left), then scroll down to find Admin.

A tour of the main sections

Home (dashboard)

The first screen you see. It shows quick-action cards for common tasks, plus a health summary showing whether any Microsoft services are having issues.

Users

This is where you manage the people in your organization. From here you can:

Groups

Manage distribution groups (for emailing a team) and shared mailboxes (like info@ or support@).

Billing

View and manage your subscriptions and licenses. See Microsoft 365 billing explained for a full guide.

Settings

Configure organization-wide settings — things like your organization's name, the default time zone, password expiry policies, and more.

Security (via Microsoft 365 Defender)

A link to the Microsoft security portals, where you can manage multi-factor authentication, review sign-in logs, and configure security defaults.

Reports

See usage reports — how many people are using email, Teams, OneDrive, and other services.

The admin center changes over time

Microsoft regularly updates the admin center's layout and adds new features. The sections above are stable, but the exact menu names and positions may shift slightly. If you can't find something, use the search bar at the top of the admin center.
