Most website problems start as a small gap nobody was watching: a backup that never restored, a renewal email that went to an old inbox, a form that quietly stopped sending. This check walks through the fifteen gaps we see most often.

How it works

Answer each question for your own site. Pick Not sure if you don't know: that counts as a gap, because if nobody knows, nobody is checking. Your answers stay in your browser and aren't sent anywhere.

  1. 1. Has your site software (core, theme and plugins or apps) been updated in the last month?
  2. 2. Do you have automatic off-site backups, and has anyone test-restored one this year?
  3. 3. Would someone get an alert within minutes if your site went down?
  4. 4. Does your site load on https:// with no "Not secure" warning on any page?
  5. 5. Is your domain on auto-renew, and do you know who can log in to the registrar?
  6. 6. Is two-factor authentication on for your website admin, hosting, domain and email accounts?
  7. 7. Have you removed access for everyone who no longer works with you?
  8. 8. Have you sent a test through every form in the last month and received the notification?
  9. 9. Are SPF, DKIM and DMARC records set up for the domain you send email from?
  10. 10. Does your homepage feel quick on a phone using mobile data, not just on office Wi-Fi?
  11. 11. Is Google Search Console set up, and has someone looked at it in the last three months?
  12. 12. Is analytics recording visits and form submissions (or sales) correctly?
  13. 13. Has anyone checked for broken links in the last three months?
  14. 14. Are your privacy policy and cookie consent up to date with what your site actually tracks?
  15. 15. Do your images have alt text, and can the site be used with a keyboard alone?

0 of 15answered. Your result appears when you've answered every question.

What to do with your result

Fix the flagged items in this order, because it's the order in which they cause the most expensive problems:

  1. Backups and two-factor authentication. These decide whether a bad day is an inconvenience or a disaster.
  2. Domain renewal and access. Losing a domain takes your website and your email offline at the same time.
  3. Updates and uptime monitoring. Most hacked sites were running outdated software, and many outages run for hours before anyone notices.
  4. Forms, tracking and Search Console. These don't break your site, but they hide the fact that you're losing leads.

Run the check again every quarter. It's a quick way to spot something that has quietly stopped working.
