Changing your logo, site title & favicon
Learn how to update your WordPress site's logo, display name, tagline, and the small icon that appears in browser tabs (the favicon).
Your logo, site title, and favicon are the most visible pieces of your brand on your website. When these need updating — a rebrand, a new logo, a corrected business name — WordPress makes it straightforward.
Quick summary
Logo, site title, tagline, and favicon are all managed in one place on most WordPress sites: Appearance → Customize → Site Identity. On sites using the newer Site Editor, these settings are accessed via Appearance → Editor. Your site title and tagline are also found under Settings → General.
What you'll need
Beginner 5 minutes- Administrator access to your WordPress site
- Your logo file (usually a PNG with a transparent background, at least 300 px wide)
- Your favicon file (a square image, ideally 512 × 512 px — PNG works well)
What is a favicon?
A favicon (short for "favorite icon") is the tiny icon that appears in your browser tab next to the page title. It also appears when someone bookmarks your site or saves it to their phone's home screen.
A good favicon is simple, square, and recognizable at a small size. Usually it's just your logo mark or initials — not the full logo with a tagline.
Changing your logo and favicon (classic themes)
Most classic themes use the WordPress Customizer for site identity settings.
Go to Appearance → Customize in your dashboard. The Customizer opens with a live preview of your site on the right.
Click "Site Identity." This section contains your logo, site title, tagline, and site icon (favicon).
To change the logo: Click "Select logo." Choose an existing image from your media library or upload a new one. WordPress may ask you to crop the image — adjust the crop area or click "Skip Cropping" if your logo is already the right dimensions.
To change the favicon (site icon): Scroll down to the "Site Icon" field. Click "Select site icon" and upload or choose a square image. WordPress will show a preview of how it looks in a browser tab.
Update your site title and tagline if needed (see below).
Click "Publish." Your changes go live immediately.
Changing your logo and favicon (block themes / Site Editor)
If your theme uses the WordPress Site Editor:
Go to Appearance → Editor in your dashboard.
Click on your header in the canvas to select it.
Click the Site Logo block — this is the block that shows your logo. Use the block toolbar to replace the image with your new logo.
To update the favicon: Go to Appearance → Editor → Styles (or look for a "Site Icon" option in the Editor's sidebar). Alternatively, go to Settings → General (see below) — the site icon setting is accessible from there too in many setups.
Click "Save" to apply your changes across the whole site.
Changing your site title and tagline
Your site title is your business name — it appears in browser tabs (when no page-specific title is set), in search results, and in some theme headers. The tagline is a short description shown in some theme designs.
Go to Settings → General in your dashboard.
Update the "Site Title" field with your correct business name.
Update the "Tagline" field. If you don't use a tagline, you can leave it blank or delete the placeholder text.
Click "Save Changes." The update applies immediately.
Site title also affects SEO
Your site title appears in browser tabs and search results. Make sure it matches your business name exactly. If your SEO plugin (like Yoast or Rank Math) has its own title settings, those may override what you set here. Ask us if you're unsure which takes precedence.
Logo file format tips
Choosing the right file format for your logo makes a big difference:
| Format | Best use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | Logos on colored or textured backgrounds | Supports transparent backgrounds |
| SVG | Crisp logos at any size | Stays sharp on all screen sizes — ask us to enable SVG uploads |
| JPEG | Avoid for logos | No transparency; edges look harsh |
| WebP | Good option, newer format | Broad browser support now |
If your logo was designed by a professional, ask your designer for a PNG file with a transparent background (sometimes called "PNG on transparent" or "logo on clear background"). This prevents a white box appearing around your logo on colored headers.
