How to register a domain name

Step-by-step guide to buying and registering a new domain name for your business, including what to look for and common mistakes to avoid.

Registering a domain name is one of the first steps in getting your business online. It's straightforward, but there are a few important choices to make along the way. This guide walks you through the whole process.

Quick summary

To register a domain, choose a registrar (like Namecheap, Google Domains, or GoDaddy), search for your desired domain name, and complete the purchase. Register it in your own name, turn on auto-renew, and enable privacy protection. The whole process takes about 10 minutes.

What you'll need

Beginner 10 minutes

Step 1: Choose a registrar

A registrar is a company authorized to sell and manage domain registrations. There are hundreds of registrars, but here are reliable options:

RegistrarGood for
NamecheapSimple interface, good pricing, free WHOIS privacy
Google Domains (now Squarespace Domains)Clean interface, easy Google Workspace setup
GoDaddyVery well known, large support team
HoverClean, no upsells, privacy included
Cloudflare RegistrarRenewal at cost, great if you already use Cloudflare

We recommend Namecheap or Cloudflare Registrar for most clients — they're straightforward and offer free WHOIS privacy.

Step 2: Search for your domain

Go to your chosen registrar's website. All registrars have a search box on their homepage.

Type the domain name you want. Include the extension — for example, yourbusiness.com.

Check if it's available. The registrar will tell you instantly whether the exact domain is available, and may suggest alternatives.

Choose your extension. If .com is taken, you might consider .co, .net, or a country-specific extension. See How to choose a good domain name for guidance.

Step 3: Add to cart and check out

Add the domain to your cart. Click the button to add it.

Decline upsells you don't need. Registrars often push hosting, email, and website builders during checkout. You don't need these — we handle hosting separately.

Choose your registration period. You can register for 1–10 years. Registering for 2+ years can save money and ensures you don't forget to renew.

Add WHOIS privacy if it's not included free. This hides your personal contact details from public lookup. Many registrars include this free; some charge extra.

Complete your purchase. Enter your payment details and billing information.

Step 4: Set up your account correctly

After you register:

Register in your own name. Make sure the registrant contact details use your name, your business email, and your address — not your developer's.

Turn on auto-renew. This prevents accidental expiry. See Turning on auto-renew.

Enable two-factor authentication on your registrar account. This protects your domain from being hijacked.

Save your login details in a password manager.

Always register in your own name

Never ask a developer or agency to register a domain in their name. If you ever part ways, you could lose access to your domain. If someone else registered your domain, ask to have it transferred to your account. See Who owns your domain.

What happens next

After registration, your domain name is yours — but it won't load a website yet. To do that, you need to:

  1. Get web hosting (see the Hosting section)
  2. Point your domain to your host (see Pointing your domain to a new site)

If we're building your site, we'll handle all of this. Just share your registrar login with us at support@chykalophia.com (unless your project lead has given you a different address).
